Mike was also at that meeting. Jeff said we'd be able to build new benches around two of the large trees in the run. Parks Dept. can turn on power in the light pole in the run if we need it to build the benches. We can purchase a picnic table also. The benches and table must be freestanding though we can chain down the table if necessary. Jeff will check to see if we can replace the existing fence with chain link and build a new large gate for truck deliveries of wood chips. He also suggested we rake out the tree pits.

After the report, the group made the following decisions regarding these projects:

Benches

Mark will coordinate with Mike and Katherine. He'll see if they can finalize the design of the benches and let us know what materials to buy. Dave offered his car to pick up materials. We'll need to pick the construction day in advance so we can ask for power if necessary and so we have time to enlist volunteers to help. Everyone in the working group will need to find a volunteer for the day-of.

Picnic Table

Dave will compare prices on tables. Tad will contact Jeff for quotes on the tables that Parks Dept. uses if necessary. Dave will let Mark and Tad know when he wants to buy the table so Mark can pay for it from the treasury.

Fence

Tad will start to price materials for a new fence. He will look for a small enough gauge fencing so that we can do away with the rat wire. He will also coordinate with Jeff to find out if and how we can proceed.

Cleanup Day

Dave will organize the May cleanup day and will organize it. We will have food at the cleanup days. Tad will organize the grocery shopping and Alison will help with cooking. In addition to spreading wood chips we will rake out the tree pits.

Bulletin Board

Tad has a weatherproof, locked bulletin board we can hang on the pole in the run. We can hang it at the next cleanup day.

Fundraising

Everyone in the working group should start taking digital photos in the dog run so we have plenty of candid and group shots for next year's calendar. We will likely have to do another round of fundraising this summer to build the fence and leave us some money for the calendars.

Online Resources

Carey will work to link our website and Yahoo group to other sites. She will also look into setting up a paypal account for Cooper Bark. Mark will give her all the usernames and passwords for our sites and email accounts.

Contact Info

Mark will circulate the contact information for everyone in the group working on these projects so we can organize without generating a lot of email on the Yahoo group.

Diagram of proposed improvements

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; We did not decide to take any actions yet but we did decide to consult more group members about the following issues:

1.Should we rake out the excess wood chips inside the tree pits?

2.What should we do about the cart that local canners keep chaining up inside the enclosure that was built to protect plantings in the northwest corner? Discard the cart? Call Parks Dept.? Put a message on the cart? Should we remove the fence from that area altogether?

Notes from the April 2008 meeting:

An additional $201.00 was turned over to the Treasurer. This brings the total profit on the sale of calendars to $514.62.

We discussed possible improvements to the run. Katherine shared her diagram of the run. We made the following decisions:

1.We discussed the need for a new water solution for the run and will look into possible options.

2.We want to build octagonal benches around the three large trees in the dog park. We are aware that we have to protect the trees, and this will be a great way to do that while encouraging dog owners to hang out in many different areas of the run.

3.We are interested in purchasing a picnic table for one end of the run as well. We would like to be consistent with the other tables in the park - could Parks order a table for us (we would pay, of course), or provide us with the contact information and model info for the vendor they use?

4.There is a possibility that we may purchase some pre-fab benches that we will need to fix into the run - we were considering cementing them in.

5.We would like to create a "gate" along one wall of the run to facilitate entry for chips in the future

6.Tad will organize clean-up day and a BBQ for Saturday, April 26 from Noon to 2 PM. We will not get new wood chips but rather rake up the old chips from the southwest corner. Tad will contact Parks Dept. about it and also let them know about our proposals for improvements.

Spring Kickoff BBQ

Our first BBQ of 2008 will be Saturday, April 26 from 12 Noon til 2PM. We sold calendars to friends and family and in the dog run. NYCPet, Muddy Paws, PS9, Must Luv Dogs and the new vet on Grand St. also sold calendars in their stores.

We collected $1249.49 in sales and spent 935.87 on printing and postage. So that makes a profit of 313.62. This brings our bank account balance to 1207.73.

Once the weather gets nice, we'll try to start taking candid photographs in the run that can be used in next year's calendar. The next calendar will contain more information about the history and activites of Cooper Bark and Cooper Park Dog Run. We'll let photographers advertise in the calendar.

We started to discuss what improvements to make in the run with the money we raised. Consensus seems to be that we need more benches, a new large gate to allow the trucks to deliver wood chips and an enclosed bulletin board. If possible, perhaps some sort of rain shelter can also be fabricated.

Everyone will reach out to people they know to see if they can build some benches. Mark will research the costs of materials for a new gate. Christina has already started pricing finished benches.

The day to install new benches will be in late May. Requests for volunteers will go out far in advance and the day will be well publicized.

In other business:

Mark is going to renew the registration of the cooperbark.com domain name.

Dave is going to design a business card that can be handed out to interested people who want to locate the dog run and have contact info for Cooper Bark.

Clean up day schedule:
January – Katherine
February – Mark
March – Dave
April – Tad

The coordinator of clean up day will put up a sign in the run to announce the date of that month's cleanup day.

Tad will draft a better-written version of our rules to make them more easily appreciated by readers. We won't necessarily create a new sign but the new version of the rules can be used in handouts, websites, emails, etc.

Tad will also draft a Cooper Bark mission statement. This will be an important tool in future fundraising.

We agreed that several of us would try to attend NYCDOG meetings in the future to network with other dog run groups and try to promote Cooper Bark. Mark will provide the contact info for NYCDOG to anyone who wants it.

In February, a woman's dog was bitten by another dog. The attacker was off-leash. The incident occurred near the Sharon St. park entrance and was not near the dog run. The victim was seriously injured and the attacker's owner was helpful. But the victim's owner was having difficulty identifying the attacker and its owner. Based on her knowledge of the Cooper Park dog community, Katherine was able to provide the victim's owner with some important clues at the February meeting.

Clean Up Day 2/16 11 AM and $10 Calendars

Clean Up Day this month is Sat., Feb. 16 at 11:00 A.M. The Parks
department can fine you for having your dog off-leash at Cooper Park -
(I believe the minimum fine is $100). As a general rule, if a dog run
exists, then there are no off-leash hours in that park. See the link
for a complete listing of these parks. Please note how parks are
categorized as either having a dog run OR having off leash designated
hours.

http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_things_to_do/facilities/af_dog_runs.html#brooklyn

Also, as both a courteous and responsible dog owner, please, please,
please, if you know your dog has aggression issues (either human or
canine) DO NOT ever let your dog off leash and out of control where it
may harm others.

Clean Up Day and Calendar Sale

Come help maintain the dog park and buy one of our fundraising calendars.
